Web analytics firm, Compete, posted a list of the top 25 social media sites on its blog last week that is fascinating to look at. Compete did the assessment last year as well and the new list shows the movements up and down the list. There aren’t any big surprises for observers of the social media space – Facebook is now number one over MySpace and Twitter has leaped into third position.
The real interesting part of the chart is how much mobility (and liquidity) there is among the social media platforms. The space is still so new — so even with Facebook and MySpace so far out front – it’s difficult even now to determine which companies will end up dominating the space 10 years from now. And will new technologies emerge that make the concept of what we now consider social media obsolete?
